External HTTP proxy security

I'm considering configuring the proxy so that it is available from the Internet.  This way, if I am at a location that restricts access to sites that I want to use, I can bounce my HTTP session through my proxy and get access.

I'm interested to hear if anyone has done this, or has any views on the security risks of opening up the proxy to the Internet (obviously, authentication would be used).

    One of the reasons that I like to use the L2TP over IPSec roadwarrior VPN is because I can choose quickly between having everything go out through the VPN tunnel, or just the things bound for my network.

    I don't think I would recommend doing what you want any other way than with a VPN, but I admit to being a little obsessive compulsive about opening as little as possible to the public.

    Yes, I tend to agree.  Every open service is a potential attack path.

    VPN is the better option.
