Slow content filtering

I am using the content filtering to block suspicious sites and therefore I have blocked sites for which the categorization fails. I sometimes get pages which fail to display due to this rule, but appear after a second try (refresh). The apparent performance of the web is sometimes very slow, but can be fixed by turning off content filtering.

As an aside, I sometimes receive notifications that up2date could not contact home.

Has anyone else noticed recent performance problems. I have had these for about a week, may be a little more. It might be useful to know that I'm in the UK.

    Content filtering is computationally expensive, so it will always add overhead to web access. 

    So - do you have enough hardware for your Astaro configuration? Have you configured DNS lookups within the Astaro? And are you sure it isn't a general network issue?

    I have been investigating the problem for a few days. I have re-installed the Cisco Pix in parallel with the Astaro box so I can test slow sites simultaneously. The Astaro is running on a Dell server with 2 dual cores and 8G RAM, it's test hardware but I think it should be man enough.

    After initially ruling out other possible causes, I connected wireshark on the router side and I can see the timeouts connecting to the Astaro network so I am fairly convinced about the cause.

    When I say slow performance, my experience is more than one minute per page. With regards the DNS, interesting idea, I will check the DNS settings later today, it might be compounding the problem.
