Opinion of Web Content filtering

Hi Guys,

We have been using  Astaro for 3 years now.  The only service we are using today other than the base firewall feature set  is the mail security option.  I am thinking about trying the web security module. I was wondering if I could get your opinions if it is worth it or not?  I am starting to visit a lot more machines(well remotely anways) lately to clean up malware. We do have desktop anti-virus/malware agents installed but it does not get everything. So I was hoping to hear from some of you who are running it to see what your opinions are.

I was also  thinking about setting up a  proxy(squid) server in a virtual machine of my own with  open source virus scanning and point the astaro unit to that to use as an upstream proxy , but I am wondering if the hassle and added latency will be worth it rather than just purchasing the web security option?

    Certainly, it's important to have anti-virus at the periphery, and the Astaro's is very effective, but the real advantage of the Astaro HTTP Proxy in V7.3+ is its ability for granular control of web usage and its integration with AD SSO.

    So, if you don't have any corporate requirement that prohibits viewing *p*o*r*n*, etc., then you probably wouldn't get much extra advantage from the HTTP Proxy.  Most companies want to avoid any possibility of being sued because some woman saw *p*o*r*n* on a co-worker's computer. As a guy who's fired women who tried to solicit other employees to help sue me (never have been), this question is key for me.

    Thanks for your thoughts Bob.  I appreciate it.  

    We are using opendns today which does a pretty good job of blocking p0rn and what have you.So that is a secondary concern.  I am more interested in how well it does blocking malware before it hits the desktop.

    Any other opinions?
