HTTP content filter database change[7.302]

Looks like the backend database for http content filtering has changed and I didn't notice.

Had a user get blocked for a frequently used site this morning with the reason being uncategorized. No problem I think. I went to the support section of Astaro.com and clicked on the web filtering test site link, hoping to submit the proper category for this regional banking site.

I get taken to trustedsource.org and am asked what product I'm using. Which of the 10 database choices do I select for 7.302?

  • Yeah, had the same thing happen... I turned off uncategorized site blocking... They should have mentioned it was a new category filter db... they only say that we have more categories.  The cool thing about the new category filter is that with this one, one site can now have multiple categories assigned to it (the old Surfcontrol DB was one category per site), like the original Cobion DB allowed.  THis was a feature a few of my customers asked for.  I have noticed that the responsiveness of the HTTP proxy has improved (it was pretty good before), I guess the new db engine is quicker.

  • It's exactly the multiple categories that are creating numerous headaches. As a K-12 school, we block games. Some sites are categorized as Education, For Kids and Games. That means the sites blocked. Do I have to create exceptions for every one of these? That seems ridiculous. Is there any way to set priorities, i.e. Educations trumps Games?
  • Jchamp, I agree that this is a needed improvement.  In just going from one-way to three-way classification, there's no advantage.

One should be able to specify Boolean phrases like "BLOCK games UNLESS education OR training" or some such technique.  That would allow tuning of the rules instead of having to constantly play with exception lists.

As it is now, we've gone from a saw with too-few teeth to one with random additional teeth sticking out to the side.

Thanks to Scott for starting this thread.  I've been uncomfortable about the changes, and this discussion has focused the issue.

  • I like your idea Bob... I've mostly had educational customers (like Jchamp, well, in the same position he's in) that complained heartily when Astaro stopped using Cobion... I believe they weren't the only ones, hence the new engine with the multiple category assignments.  I think your idea would give us the best of both worlds.

  • The use of Boolean login might work depending on interface, though it might be difficult to anticipate all combinations that might exist. Maybe the games category should be more granular, or another category of educational games. I've seen Cobion mentioned a few times. I starting using the ASG after that. How did users deal with the multiple categories with Cobion?

    Thanks,
