Website connection resets with HTTP proxy enabled

Yes, same here. Downloads get disconnected, websites stop after having been loaded half way through, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Unforunately in my case that behaviour doesn't change when I deactivate the transparent proxy. I take it I don't have to restart the machine for that setting to take effect, do I?

But it's not only web connections that are affected, for example also ssh and icq connections get disconnected. Usually after a short time. If you reconnect (as often as it's necessary) the connections tend to become stable somewhen.

This strange behaviour has only been occuring for one or two weeks or so. The only thing I could remember changing would be activating quality of service. But regarding the stability nothing's changing now when I switch it off.

hmm,  I recently enabled QOS as well.  Doesn't fix the issue when I turn it off.

So you did change something about the configuration, hm? ;-)

I'm considering to reinstall the system and import a configuration backup when I find the time. Maybe this will help.

UPDATE:
I did a reinstall recently. All was working again. So I imported my config with some qos rules enabled. As far as I can say (didn't test long before continueing) it was working. But when making the slightest changes in the qos menu the connection problems returned. After reseting the config (no reinstall) and importing a configuration where qos was disabled (this is where I am right now) it seems to work.

So my tip: Set the configuration to something you like. Actually I advice you to create two: One with qos enabled, one with it completey disabled. Make backups and reset Astaro. Afterwards import your backup, see if it works.

I'd really like to use qos to slow down large file transfers if e.g. something like a vnc connection is necessary. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work properly, at least not for me.

Interresting.  I disabled QOS, but I still have the same issues.  I may try a backup and restore as well, when I have time.  I think this is a pretty major bug though and should be fixed.

I must say after two days I can say that the problem isn't entirely fixed, but much less distinctive.

There's also the 7.104 update displayed as "available for download", but it won't continue with it. Uploading it manually doesn't work. Maybe I'll do another reinstall as it is so much fun.

To fix the up2date problem, you can try logging in as root on the console (well, loginuser, then su), and:

mount /opt/inst/
rpm -ivh --force /opt/inst/rpm/ep-up2date-7.1-104.i686.rpm
umount /opt/inst

then reboot or:

/usr/local/bin/netselector.plx --infile /etc/up2date/authservers.ini --outfile /etc/up2date/servers.sorted
/etc/init.d/mdw restart

Hi Bruce, thanks for your post. I also found it in another thread. Unfortunately the specified file ep-up2date-7.1-104.i686.rpm didn't exist. Even if I manually downloaded the 104 update it wouldn't let me install it.
So I finally redownloaded an older installation source 7.100 which wouldn't download updates either (for whatever reason). But there I could at least upload them manually and finally install all of them. Everything update-related seems to work again now as the pattern updates are updated.
May Astaro should better provide an installation source with 7.104 integrated.

Concerning the connection stability issue:
After having the system reinstalled, updated to the latest version and imported a config backup with qos disabled, I seem to have regained the stability I was used to :-)

Qos seems to be a kind of construction site :-)

I'm still having the issue- QOS enabled or not...
As soon as I enable the HTTP proxy- bam- any page I go to give me the connection reset error.

Bummer, it worked fine for months. Tried resetting to defaults- even with a minimal config it doesn't work with the proxy.

Have you tried a reinstall or only reset to defaults?

Hm, I'm running it in Vmware Server (old GSX). I always thought it's pretty comfortable to install something in it - don't have to physically go to machine, not insert a real cd/dvd, always have a screen...
Anyway, I'd give it a try. Maybe you can just take a snapshot just to make sure you're on the safe side and give it a try.

Hm, okay, if you're using the virtual appliance. I use the default iso image. I wanted a preallocated disk and haven't found a reason why I should use the virtual appliance as I've tried it and don't see a real difference. The only reason I could think of, would be that it might not be supported.
But anyway, if you install it from the iso, you're asked about the ip address the system should apply, where I can just enter that one it had before the (re)installation.

I don't think it should require a start from scratch reinstall to fix issues.

Of course, just as Windows should not crash every once in a while. But if you're a home user like I am you don't have much to complain... :-(
If you're not, you could open up a ticket as I would be very eager to find out how to use qos. :-)

It seems that problem is kind of known.

I am just using it at home for now, and I don't have much to complain about, but I am wanting to eventually provide proof of concept so my company can start selling them.  Hang ups like this isn't going to get me very far.

I think I will try the ISO install.  There are a couple of things I didn't like about the Virtual appliance anyway (HD set to 30GB, and a couple other things).

When you do the ISO install, what parameters for the vm do you put into GSX? (OS, Hard Drive Size, Memory, etc)

I provided my vm with this hardware:

• 1 GB Ram (this is moooooooore than enough for home usage, seems to be sufficient for smaller companies, too). Just because ram is very cheap right now and to avoid additional (physical) hard disk io's in case of swapping.
  
• 10 GIG SCSI hard drive, preallocated in one file (less should work if I take a look at the momentary disk usage, but installations failed with the informative error message "failed" if you have a disk smaller than 10 GB.)
  
• OS: Linux, other linux
