Downloads with proxy

Is there anyway to tune this so the downloads don't slow down. I have a 8 meg connection. If I bypass the proxy I can download at 1 meg per second. If I use the proxy I bounce around between 500 and 700 kbs. This is generally with large files. 1 gig or larger so it is not scanning the files I assume. Is there anything I can do to find the bottleneck?

120 Gig Sata
2 gigs ram. 
Nvidia 10/100 nic  external
Intel Gig nic internal

Any more info needed? I doubt it is a hardware issue. This hardware
ran opensuse prior to being used for as astaro server with zero issues.

I can confirm that there appears to be a cap somewhere. I too am experiencing the slow download speed on our box at work. We only have the Base + Web filtering on (Transparent mode, AV 1 scanner, 10MB limit, no cache). We only have 5 users at any given time and the download speed, especially when the download manager screen appears is very slow (100 - 200Kb/sec). However when I go straight through the firewall with a packet filter rule I am downloading at 1Mb/sec (We have a 10Mbit fibre line [:D])

The new HTTP Proxy in 7.1 seems to have some sort of cap or limit. It should be downloading at approximately the same speed and then scanning for viruses. Is it scanning on the fly?

I just had cable installed and i average 6 megabits.  I routinely see boots to 16 megabits though.  I have another cable installed Astaro on completely different hardware where they get a solid 10 megabits with boosts to 21.  There's no cap in the Astaro proxy but definitely some bugs with the new proxy.  This is most likely an interaction with your hardware and Astaro causing this issue and not an arbitrary cap.

Well the box at work is an ASG 120 for 5 users. I agree that the proxy has some bugs as I have a home box that works nicely. Here is a thought... William do you use "TCP Window Scaling"?

no as that causes more issues than it solves..and winders machines do not do it correctly anyway.  I would leave that off if you are using it.

In the advanced area of the packet filter i have all of those turned off.

Even "Spoof Protection"?...What about "Connection tracking helpers"?

You should be fine with Spoof protection set to normal, and with the normal connection tracking helpers in place (although I always remove the pptp helper as we don't normally allow pptp).  I'd turn the other stuff off.
