Yes, Squid is gone. Astaro software engineers wrote a brand new custom proxy to replace it. One of the key reasons they got rid of it was performance concerns; there were many instances where Squid could just not keep up with requests in larger environments (I had a couple of customers that had this problem), and for those using smaller appliances (think 512MB of RAM) were suffering performance issues. The new proxy, by and large, appears to have fixed all of these ills. It also allows Astaro greater flexibilty in customizations, like the ability to allow streaming video and audio to pass through, which was always a sticking point in older versions.
Sure, there will be a few bugs to iron out as they go along, but all of my customers are quite satisfied with the improvements that have been made. I recall we had many issues that were Squid-related, so I'm sort of glad it's gone. I too, am quite satisified, and believe that the extended beta program used before the launch of 7.100 was a great help in enhancing the stability of the current release.

they have made the switch and that's their decision but i have worked with squid setups where one mahcine handles hundreds or more users..and that's over 10 yers ago. systems are so much more powerful now. their main issue was simply tuning of squid's caching and memory usage.

Turning off caching? Are you mad, man?!?! Thats probably the number one reason to even have a proxy for me... Content filtering would be a close second. Do you know how much money I save every year by caching CNN, ESPN, and ebay alone?
I agree with William. Squid cache tuning improves performance on low-end hardware. other appliance builder are still using squid. if astaro is able to develop there own, more efficient, http-proxy, its fine for me.
