Streaming Media and HTTP Proxy

Hi All,

We are using the standard filter on port 8080. When a user tries to open a media stream, say a radio station using Windows Media Player, the music doesn't start. If it does start, it happens after 5-10 minutes. 

- There are no categories blocked by the content filter. 
- Single Scan AV is running
- Anti-Spyware is running

Any ideas on this?

    The proxy is caching the stream (if the content provider allows this on port 80), scanning it, etc. and that's the reason for the delay.  ALso, if the content provider doesn't allow port 80, you will need to define the Windows Media ports and a packet filter (and a MASQ NAT rule if you don't have on already) to allow streaming on those ports (RTSP, MMS, etc.).  Unfortunately, Astaro has seen fit to not include the ability to configure Regular Expressions for whitelisting in Version 7 (unlike the previous version, Version 7) that would allow you to simply whitelist files with, say, the .asf extension, etc.  The only way to get streaming audio to work is either with packet filters, or by whitelisting the entire site (a security risk, as then no AV checks are done on other parts of the site you're browsing to) in the exceptions for the proxy.  This issue also affects other streaming media, such as Realmedia, Youtube, etc.

    Thanks for the info Bruce. Well, whitelisting whole sites isn't going to happen. As for whitelisting filetypes, if that feature is returned, we may do that for video files.

    Hold on a bit longer ... look at the BETA version of 7.1 .... I think youre problem is solved ...

    YEs, I'm testing 7.075 (beta) right now, and streaming appears to be fixed in the next release... after digging into the system, it appears they are simply passing through content what is tagged as streaming media.  Works pretty good.

    Just received an email detailing the the new beta release, with such wonders as 

    "Streaming media bypass
    Ability to disable video and audio stream scanning in order to avoid delays caused by downloading and scanning the entire stream through the HTTP proxy prior to playing."

    I'm on with downloading 0.75 as we speak. Looks like the new release addresses many problems I've had myself, and seen in the Astaro forum.
