browsing problems

Hello, I installed the ASG software so I can test it out at home and hopefully if all goes well would purchase a couple 120s for use in a business.

Installed is Version 7.000 on a AMD 64bit 3000+ with 2 gigs of RAM and a 60gig HDD.  The biggest problem right now is that browsing seems very "broken".  Sometimes you can browse from page to page, but about 1 in every 4 pages won't load.  You hit refresh on the browser and it thinks about loading but never does.  If you hit CTRL-F5 to force the browser to pull all new information, then that seems to work 50% of the time.  If that doesn't work, then you are left fighting with refreshing the page until hopefully it comes up eventually.  I'm thinking this has something to do with the transparent proxy, but I'm not sure.  I've even tried turning off the virus scanning because I saw that mentioned in one of these posts, but that doesn't do anything.

I've installed ASG on another computer (celeron 2.2ghz with 1 gig RAM), and I've tried browsing using 3 different computers.  This problem is consistent with all combinations of ASG/browsing computers.  The install was pretty basic, and I haven't changed many of the default settings, so what could cause this?  I am using NAT Masquerading, because as I understand it, you need that in order to use NAT.  Otherwise, nothing has changed.

Any help would be much appreciated,

    I would at the very least upgrade the build version to 7.003, than work through exactly how you resolve via DNS (as Bruce has said).

    If you have no internal SERVRS then use the ASG as the DNS Proxy (thats what it;s for - it is a security feature as well, as you limit traffic going to the PUBLIC network on port 53 UDP) 
    Ping a PUBLIC WEB Site and ensure DNS resolves OK
    Make sure the ASG has it's DNS forwarders set
    Go basic first, Turn on HHTP proxy, Transparent mode 
    See if all is OK then ..... if not post back ...

    Thanks for the quick replies!

    DNS appears to work correctly anyway because it's usually browsing within the same website that gives me problems and by then the local computer should have already cached the DNS name.  Regardless, I did ping several public servers and it works fine.

    I also have it checked to receive the forwarders automatically from the ISP and I do have 2 DNS servers listed there.

    I also disabled HTTP Proxy entirely and it hasn't helped.

    The next thing I'd like to try is upgrading to ver 7.003.  Can I do this from within the management console, or is the only way to do this to download the new ISO and reinstall everything?

    If you turn up2date on, and your DNS is really working, the up2date should be downloaded automatically onto the system.  THen you can trigger the install manually (no need to reload).

    For some reason I can't get there.  It tells me "Unable to complete backend request. Please click Shift-Reload in your browser to attempt re-login".  It's the only screen that I can't seem to get into and it's the same on both of my systems.

    I installed EtherPeek to look at the HTTP traffic and I'm not sure what would be considered "normal" but it seems to me that there is a huge amount of slow response times and checksum errors.  I've attached a portion of the log file.

    Hmm... I dunno.  Maybe just backup your configuration, install from a 7.003 ISO, and restore the configuration?

    I was thinking the same thing.  I just downloaded 7.003 and checked the MD5 checksum and it's good.  I'll install it tonight and see what happens.  I'll keep you posted.  Thanks for all your help.

    Well build 7.003 then you can UP2DATE to 7.004 it just came out today. has some more important fixes.

    Well, I've been running version 7.003 for about an hour, then noticed 7.004, so I upgraded to that and have been running for another 3 hours and things work so much better!  I'm surprised at how glitchy 7.000 was because I couldn't get it working on 2 completely different systems and reinstalled it about 2-3 times on each.  7.002 and 7.003 must be pretty new because I only downloaded the 7.000 ISO a couple weeks ago.

    I do have another question about "unaffected emails" but I'll check out the email forum first and maybe post it there if I don't find the answer.
