Caching large size files

If you don't manage squid's usage you thrash worse when you enter swap hell..[:)]  If youhave enough ram this is not an issue..this is just how i run mine..

The setting now are:
cache_mem is 64 MB                                         before it was 16
maximum_object_size_in_memory is 512 KB    before it was 20

I could not find maximum_object_size, so we enter it manually and assign 10240 KB

Can you describe more why you put 0 to maximum_object_size_in_memory and 0 to cache_mem, while the maximum_object_size is 250 MB

I want squid to use LESS ram instead of more.  You apparently have a gig or two of ram installed..[:)]  I made the maximum_object_size controls the size of objects that get stored on the hard disk.  Since i want my hard disk cache to be used to it fullest potential i want it caching hte maximum amount of files.  I currently have like a 5 gig squid partition so i raised mine to 250 megs.  I put the cache_mem and Maximum_object_size_in_memory to zero to minimize squid's usage.  I have not noticed any performance hit from shifting my cach from ram to the hard disk.  How much ram do you have in this macgine?

maximum_object_size_in_memory is 512 KB    before it was 20KB

I enter manually maximum_object_size is 10240.

My internet is via Satellite, the only way of internet in IRAQ, and I have a shared bandwidth 1/46. Sometimes the internet got slow. Moreover I would like to cache the maximum number of sites in my server.

IMO you should use the settings i suggested.  With half a gig you are going to make that machine swap quite easily since squid is going to hog your ram.  This will maximize your cached objects and minimize squid's ram usage.

I connect 2 PCs to the same hub.

I download the update of norton at PC1,
I download the same update of norton at PC2, it takes the same time.

I dowload an mp3 song at PC1,
I download the same song at PC2, it takes also the same time.


Will you help please,

your maximum object size is only 10k.  You need to make that 102400.
remember in v4/5 the values default in KB not MB.
