http proxy - external access

I have http proxy enabled on my ASL box. Everything works great on my internal network, however, if I try to use the proxy while at work I get an error from my browser, either; "connection refused" or "proxy server not found". My set up is: Operation Mode = standard, Log Level = full, anonymity = none, caching is enabled, port =8080, I have my works IP address defined as a network and that network is allowed access. I have even set the proxy to allow from all and I get the same results.

I am sure this is not an issue on my work network as my friend runs an ASL http proxy and I can connect to his proxy with out a problem. He has looked at my configuration and says it looks the same as his? Ideas?
Verision = 4.x with latest updates applied. Thanks for any help.

    I'm a little confused.  Are you trying to use the HTTP Proxy for an inbound connection?  Maybe someone else here can chime in on this, but I don't believe the Proxy is really designed for this -- it's for proxying HTTP connections outbound.  At least, that's my take on it.  I've never tried to use it in the other direction.

    the squid could be used as a "HTTP accelerator" but the squid in astaro cannot be configured for such use (in a standard scenario). if you get this to work post it.

    Interesting...so, from outside of my network, I should NOT be able to use my home external IP as my proxy server on port 8080? I will double check with my friend who allows me to use his proxy...but I am 99% sure he is doing this with ASL. If I can get the info from him I will post it.

    Basically at work we have WebSense which monitors www connections and I am always getting blocked when I try to look up many sites that fall under the category of "hacking" in WebSense's view.

    Why don't you open a PPTP tunnel from your work PC to your home ASL box first? Then you can browse the web via the tunnel. You will then connect to your Squid web proxy from the inside, rather than via the external interface.

    I have been trying to enable the HTTP proxy for our PPTP users at work, but am not sure how to specify the proxy in Internet Explorer.

    Any pointer ?
