Outgoing VPN

I've got a UTM working fine as my home gateway, talking PPPOE to my ISP.

I'd like to be able to funnel either some or all outgoing traffic via a VPN, in part due to the UK's new Investigatory Powers Act, a.k.a. the "Snooper's Charter" (Not for any particular reason, just for the principle of the thing!) and in part due to wishing to access a foreign geo-restricted website!  I'm aware that there has been a lot of discussion about the difficulty, or impossibility, of setting up the UTM as a client to a third party VPN service - I've read a few threads on this issue!

My thought therefore would be to add a cheap VPS somewhere external, which would give me the control to run whatever I need to accept a connection from the UTM.  The question is, what do I need to run to get this working? Would another instance of the UTM be the solution, or some customised OpenVPN install?  Has anybody done this? I would appreciate any pointers...

Thanks!

  • Hi, and welcome to the UTM Community!

There are some free clients & free services that you can use from your PC/Mac/phone.

Rather than the UTM and depending on your other IT experience, StrongSWAN IPsec might be a better fit for a small VPS.

    Cheers - Bob
