SSL VPN with Windows 10

I have Sophos UTM 9.405-5 installed for home use, with the SSL VPN that works for my Android devices to connect from outside.  I now have a Windows 10 computer I am trying to setup but it will not connect.

I logged into the User Portal with the Win10 PC and downloaded the complete package for Vista/7/8, but when I try to connect with the Win10 computer I have this in the SSL VPN log on the server (I hid part of my public IP):

2016:08:14-10:58:43 firewall openvpn[6186]: TCP connection established with [AF_INET]192.168.0.33:51425 (via [AF_INET]xx.xx.100.81:443)
2016:08:14-10:58:44 firewall openvpn[6186]: 192.168.0.33:51425 Non-OpenVPN client protocol detected
2016:08:14-10:58:44 firewall openvpn[6186]: 192.168.0.33:51425 SIGTERM[soft,port-share-redirect] received, client-instance exiting

This is what is in the log on the Win10 client:
Aug 14 09:46:56 2016 Attempting to establish TCP connection with [AF_INET]xx.x.100.81:443 [nonblock]
Sun Aug 14 09:46:56 2016 MANAGEMENT: >STATE:1471182416,TCP_CONNECT,,,,,,
Sun Aug 14 09:46:57 2016 TCP connection established with [AF_INET]xx.xx.100.81:443
Sun Aug 14 09:46:57 2016 Send to HTTP proxy: 'CONNECT firewall:443 HTTP/1.0'
Sun Aug 14 09:46:57 2016 recv_line: TCP port read failed on recv()
Sun Aug 14 09:46:57 2016 SIGUSR1[soft,init_instance] received, process restarting
Sun Aug 14 09:46:57 2016 MANAGEMENT: >STATE:1471182417,RECONNECTING,init_instance,,,,,
Sun Aug 14 09:46:57 2016 Restart pause, 5 second(s)

I am not sure where to start on the Windows 10 computer.  Do I need to install an OpenVPN client for Windows on it also?

  • Sophos tests new versions of open-source software before updating what's in the UTM.  I suspect that you might find it easier to just use the latest OpenVPN client from openvpn.net.  I know that people have made it work on Windows 10, but I'm warning folks away from it now, so I haven't followed the issues here.  You might try a google on site:community.sophos.com "Windows 10" "SSL VPN" - any luck?

  • I tried updating the TAP Windows driver with the directions in this thread but it is still failing:

To try the latest client from openvpn.net, do I leave the Sophos client installed?

  • I would uninstall the Sophos client first.  The settings all stay in place, so just move the contents of the config folder to the new OpenVPN config folder.
