Setup a VPN between 2 houses

Hi,
My brother lives few streets over from me. I am currently in the process of replacing both our firewalls with Sophos (moving from pfSense). We wanted to create a VPN between our two networks so that we can share files directly (via mapped drives hopefully) rather than uploading files to Dropbox.

Can this be done in Sophos?

    Yes it can.  Your easiest solution would be a site-to-site VPN, either IPSec or SSL (https://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/115306.aspx). To avoid a big pain point, make certain that both of your internal networks are using different internal IP ranges.

    BTW, do you have any experience with how much setting setting up VPN slows down the network traffic? We are both on 100 down / 30 up plan with our ISP.

    Hi ashaneil,

    The other thing I'd add is that both endpoints of the VPN tunnel should have Dynamic DNS setup on them. Both VPN endpoints need to know the other end's IP address, and if that changes frequently (most ISP's it does unless you pay extra for Static IP's) a publicly resolvable hostname from a Dynamic DNS provider such as DynDNS.com should work.

    Does VPN slow down network traffic. To an extent yes, however it really depends on what hardware you are using for the UTM, and what VPN option you chose. From my experience, running a reasonbly modern i3/i5 CPU with AES-NI extensions should be able to handle 100/30 using either the IPSEC or SSL VPN options (both use AES under the hood by default). On a 100/30, the tunnel speed however is limited to 30mbps as the upload speed is the limiter in this case.
