SSL VPN - web filtering - user id

I use SSL VPN (system is UTM 9.305-4).
We use AD authentication.

The only problem is, in the web filtering logs, all VPN users show up as:
user="" ad_domain=""

Users not going through VPN work as expected.

Is there any way to get the user id to show in VPN so I can use them in rules?

    Have the devices been joined to the domain?  Are the SSL VPN users Local to the UTM, or backend authenticated to the AD?  (I don't know that I have the answer.)
