Lots of connection dropouts

UTM9 running 9.205-12 OpenVPN client 2.3.0 (supplied by UTM)

The system tried to join a drive to a directory on a joined drive.

Different users in various geographies are suffering this and the frequency seems to be increasing. I'm at home now and to get the UTM version required about 5 connection attempts because of dropout. It says it will try again in 5 seconds and sometimes, after 4 or 5 attempts, it does reconnect but will drop out again after a short while. A lot of chatter on the web suggest it is an OpenVPN issue - can you confirm? If so, what's to be done?

  • There's no inherent issue regarding "dropouts" on the SSL VPN connection that I'm aware of.  The most common cause of these is bad internet connectivity (somewhere in the connectivity path there exists a congested or intermittent connection.  Also, if your appliance is overloaded, and low on ram and/or CPU, this could cause problems.

Also check the Speed/Duplex settings on your UTM to Router (ISP router) connection; a mismatch there can cause all sorts of weird and intermittent connectivity issues.

  • FWIW, using UDP for the SSL VPNs will give better overall performance. (set it in the UTM and re-download the client/config).

It won't cure dropouts but performance should be better.

  • Excellent, thank you all and I'll follow-up on your suggestions.
  • In addition to Bruce's suggestions, try lowering the MTU.
