Preferred VPN type for Windows and Android

After limping along with PPTP for a while, I'm ready to move on. I want to connect both Windows and Android clients, and have access to both the local network, and the Internet through the VPN. I'm not looking for the best security, or the most impressive coding, or the 'coolest' or newest option. I'm looking for something easy to set up and use, stable, and with reasonably good security. I only have about 4 clients. I'd like to use the same type of VPN for both Windows and Android. What would you recommend? IPSEC? OpenVPN? Something else? This is for my personal use, not an office.

    If you're talking about using the Sophos UTM for this job then Remote SSL is your best solution. It's both simple and secure.
    Set it up to use UDP (not TCP so it performs better) and in the networks to access enter your local LAN and the Internet IPv4 definitions. Tick automatic firewall rules if all 4 clients are allowed to reach both your LAN and the Internet.
    Client can be downloaded through the userportal.

    At this point in time I have to second the SSL VPN suggestion.  

    I have tried L2TP over IPSec, and IPSec with xauth, and though I much prefer IPSec with xauth because it connects in a few seconds as compared to 10-30 for L2TP over IPSec, I also occasionally have connectivity problems and have to re-connect the VPN to get things going again. When checking the forums and feature requests it seems like the version of IPSec in the UTM may be slightly dated and I suspect this is contributing to my problem but I haven't investigated thoroughly to verify version numbers. I had this problem on L2TP over IPSec as well. I haven't tested yet but I suspect SSL VPN does not have this problem.

    I should add that all of my IPSec tests were done using my Android 4.3 device.
