Authenticating SSL VPN users

Hi
How are the SSL VPN client authenticated on the SSL VPN?
I noticed that when you install the VPN Client you also have some client certificates. Are those certificates used together with the username and password? In other words, username and password is not enough, you also have to have the client certificates as well?

    Better security is indeed a big reason to prefer one of the Remote Access methods using personal certificates.
