just wanted to share this, my colleagues and me experienced the very same issue on our Windows 8 Enterprise Laptops. When we dialed in after entering the usernme and password the client crashed (at least the GUI).
After Playing arround and reinstalling without success I checked windows logs and found an error, google gave me an openvpn thread.

So bottom line, we work at customers were we enable the proxy in our Internet Explorer, so we change also the VPN Client to use the System setting. Changing to using no proxy resolves the Problem.
