LDAP for remote user vpn auth - change password?

Can someone confirm that the 'change password' option is not available to user portal users if a remote LDAP server backend is being used for authentication?

I wanted to be able to provide vpn/user portal users a way to change their own passwords, but that doesn't seem to be possible.

Is there a possible workaround?  or is this simply not possible except with locally authenticated users?  Obviously, the LDAP bind user would have to have sufficient permissions to be able to make changes back to the ldap directory.
