VPN clients on same layer 2 as local LAN

Has any one configured either the L2TP or IPSEC VPN to allow the VPN clue te to be part of the same layer 2 network as the on site devices?  I used to do this with OpenVPN but do not see options or instructions for this with the IPSEC or L2TP systems in the Astaro/Sophos box.

    Thanks Bob.  I like this approach better as it allows me to use applications and services from my iPhone and laptop which use mDNS(Bonjour, ZeroConf, Rendezvous).  mDNS uses broadcasts and some services just won't play nice with a rebroadcast.

    Edit: Any tips would be appreciated.  A basic ifconfig on the box doesn't show me the interface used for the IPSEC VPN. If the solution doesn't require continuous manual configuration and is stable it would be nice to try out.
