VPN clients on same layer 2 as local LAN

Has any one configured either the L2TP or IPSEC VPN to allow the VPN clue te to be part of the same layer 2 network as the on site devices? I used to do this with OpenVPN but do not see options or instructions for this with the IPSEC or L2TP systems in the Astaro/Sophos box.

There's no way to do this in WebAdmin. If this is for home use, you certainly should be able to do this at the command line. What's the reason for using this approach?
