Site to Site VPN Alerts

We need to setup alerting for site-to-site vpn tunnel monitoring. I know currently that alerting is not available in 7.5.10 so I need to figure out how to add an alert that monitors the status of a site-to-site ipsec tunnel.

Does anyone know how to:
a) Setup status monitoring of the tunnel
b) Insert alerts into the alerting engine

I have already used an many votes in the feature suggestion section on this as I can, so any word as to if or when this feature will be available would be great. SNMP alerts would also be great to for when I setup a Nagios box but currently email alerts will suffice.

Already done that multiple times and voted to the max of my votes...
I am looking for a way to set this up via scripting. This critical for us and I cannot wait for this feature to be added.
