VPN died with "IPSec in wrong state" error

I spent about an hour trying to work out why I could no longer connect to my work network from home.

Then I got an email from the Astaro gateway saying,

HA selfcheck: Please see attached logfile

HA SELFMON WARN: IPSec in wrong state, switching to master mode ...

After that it worked fine.

Any ideas a) why IPSec would die and b) why it took so long to work out there was a problem?
