Cannot get email until I ping the exchange server

Hi,

I am using the Cisco VPN on the iPhone to connect to our internal network. I have a vpn pool setup and this works fine. When I try to connect to my email I get the error message Cannot Get Mail - The connection to the server failed. I have a ping tool on my iPhone and I ping the exchange server IP address. The first ping response is normally a time out but then all other responses reply fine. If I then switch back to mail I can then connect and download my mail. 

Has anyone else experienced similar issues or know what this could be? Is there somekind of keep-alive setting for the Cisco VPN?

    I'm just spitballing, since I don't have an iPhone.   
     
    Check the logs and see if the check for email is using the VPN tunnel IP address or the public IP address of the phone.  If using the public IP, then you would probably have to add the account used as an allowed relay.
     
    Another thought that comes to mind is whether or not you have set a Masq rule for your VPN pool to your internal network.

    Thanks for your reply.

    The mail client on the iPhone is using the internal IP address to access the email. I have checked in the packet filter logs and traffic between the vpn pool and local subnet isn't getting blocked (I have Automatic packet filter rules enabled). I also added a vpn pool to internal network Any rule just in case.

    Any thoughts?
