That will give you information to decide your network topology.  I think you will find that the consensus is that you should do:

ISP  Modem  Astaro  Wireless Router  Laptop

That would mean nothing is plugged into the WAN port of the router and that you use it like a wireless access point.  Also, that you do DHCP with the Astaro (look in 'Network Services').

but i have wireless router with an inbuilt Modem to it which directly connects me to the ISP 

its like   Wireless router-----Wireless LT

now i want to insert my Astaro in between them.

can i jus put my astaro  E 1into the wan port of Wireless Router and E0 to my Laptop
and turnoff DHCP on ASTARO and instead of router.

Will this work?

Andy.l says that he configured an Astaro as a web proxy using only a single NIC.  I suspect that he used "Standard" or another non-transparent mode, and configured his browser to point at the Astaro Proxy on port 8080.

That would mean that Intrusion Prevention, packet filtering and routing would be inactive.  You could leave DHCP turned off in the Astaro, but you could use Astaro for DNS and NTP.

If you want to use the Astaro for anything other than proxies, you indeed would need to connect your laptop to another port on the Astaro.  This would require you to do more setup, but you can just follow the Installation chapter in the User's Manual (download from the Astaro KnowledgeBase).  Depending on what NICs you have, you might need a crossover cable or a small switch.

syedabrar.sa - I had this problem at my dads place, I wanted to put the Astaro in front of all his stuff. If you want to use all the features of the Astaro you can probably not get away without either another Wireless AP or another modem (i guess you have some sort of ADSL).

Two solutions that I know works for you is one of two options. It requires you to either get a modem (1) or a wireless AP (2):
1) This is what BAlfson says in his first post. You then need to connect it like this:
ISP  Modem  Astaro  Wireless Router  Laptop
NB - All the security on the network should be turned off, routing, fw everything. The wireless should get an IP address network it's connected to (You can connect the astaro to one of the switch ports).

2) If you get a wireless AP you should put your wireless router where it says "Modem" above. You also have to put the wireless router in bridge mode, preferably with pppoe forwarding, connecting the wan-port into the wall and the astaro to the switch. No other computers should be connected to the switch in the wireless router. The AP connects to a switch, either on internal, or on a second interface (if you like to split wirless and wired connection appart with rules, QoS, etc.


I have one experimental option for you (no need to buy anything), but I don't know if it works, AND it is not a secure configuration.
- Remove all configuration about firewall/nat/security etc from the wireless router.
- Configure WLAN security settings (wpa2 etc) (and make sure you can connect to it, not sure if you can connect to management gui after you turn on bridge later on in this config)
- Give the wireless router an IP or get one from DHCP (DHCP is fine)
- Put wireless router in bridge mode with pppoe forwarding so that the astaro handles pppoe config/connect.
- WirelessRouter: Connect wan port to wall, and lan port 1 to astaro. Also, connect port 2 to the astaro, normally nic1 (Internal).

This might work. But I don't know how the switch part of the wireless router works with both pppoe traffic and ethernet traffic. It might very well work ok, but not the best security, but probably ok for a home network.
