iphone: Enable VPN automatically

Hello Folks,

I've successfully configured an iphone to connect to ASG via PPTP.
Once enabled, the VPN-tunnel is being established and everything works as expected. However, as soon as the iphone enters standby, VPN is being disabled and has to be re-enabled manually.
I found this document: http://images.apple.com/iphone/business/docs/iPhone_VPN.pdf
which states, that the iphone can automatically enable VPN-Connections "on demand".

However, I have not been able to achieve this so far.

I anyone could spread some light, I would be very glad.

    I've never tried it, but I don't think it's possible witht eh built-in VPN clients.  Why do you want to keep vpn up all of the time?

    I don't want VPN to be up all the time. What I want is either to get the iPhone to re-establish the tunnel upon reconnecting to the internet or - what would be even smarter - to re-establish the tunnel whenever a connection into any of the subnets provided by the VPN-adaptor is needed.
    According to the apple-document mentioned in my first post, this is possible. Unfortunately the document doesn't mention HOW.

    Mine is a 3G, not a 3GS.  I know the client on the 3G V3.1.3 cannot do this.
