Droid to ASG over L2TP/IPSec PreShared Key VPN Issues

I'm trying to connect a Droid to ASG 7.502 via L2TP/IPSec and it seems to be running into all kinds of problems.  I have the same shared secret setup on both the Droid and ASG (and I've tried various lengths/characters in case the Droid also has minimum password/secret requirements).  Nothing seems to work.  

Below is the log from each time the Droid tries to connect from it's L2TP/IPsec PreShared Key profile.

    This is a little off topic as it's not l2tp, but:

    FWIW,
    I have a Samsung Moment (Android 1.5).
    I've rooted it (required).
    The OpenVPN client works with my firewall at home.

    The packages from the MarketPlace are:
    OpenVPN Installer

    and a UI app for managing connections:
    OpenVPN Settings 
    OR
    TunnelDroid

    all of those are free.
    TunnelDroid seems to handle multiple connections better than OpenVPN Settings, but they both use the same configuration database or files, so you can switch between them at will.
