We have recently noted that there are significant problems on the Remote access connections, concerning latence and bandwith.
We have setup both SSL and L2TP connections for roadwarriors. They work somewhat okay for file sharing, intranet / HTTP and such. But for example playing wave audio over 1 mbit/s is impossible, due to the connection dropping a lot of packets.
Having tested, the file transfer speed on SSL VPN tops at 50% of the 10 mbit adapter, so it's 5 mbit/s. This would be okay without the dropped packets. For L2TP, the case is quite same. Our connections are 50 mbit/s fiber on the office and 10 mbit/s ADSL on the roadwarrior so that should not be an issue.
What kind of operability we should expect on roadwarrior VPN connections? Is this some local problem or general situation?
