Recommendations - vista 64 + mac, etc

I am setting up a new infrastructure, and I will have a number of mobile users.

Some of the users are Mac, some Vista 64 and I am sure we are going to hit Windows 7 shortly.

I don't need rock solid security, but I need some security and I need it to work first time every time.

I have a few questions.  Which method should I use for my vista 64 client who is a road warrior.  SSL should work, but it has been flaky (the connection will drop, but the gui won't reflect it has been dropped) and you don't know until you can do anything web wise.

Split tunneling is an option as we might have to go both ways at time.

As well, even though we use an external ISP for our email, can a road warrior pop their email through the gateway without bring up the SSL connection (just in case they forget).  

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    Not sure about Mac, but Windows includes a VPN client that does L2TP over IPsec.  The Vista and W7 versions let you choose between using a cert or a pre-shared key.  Very secure, very reliable.

    That said, the Astaro SSL client works well and, like the Windows client, shows an icon in the notification area of the taskbar.  If you want to allow remote users to be able to switch between split- and full-tunnel, the L2TP over IPsec is easier.

    There are some tricks with POP3 that others will be better at advising you on.

    What is happening now with the SSL connection on the windows client is that the link drops (silently) yet the task bar light does not switch to yellow or red.  That is something we have yet to solve.
