General VPN Question

I am trying to find a solution to a problem, I understanding specifically how the VPN routes traffic would help.  My question is this:

A computer is connected to internet using an ethernet cable.  With the VPN connected HOW does it know to route your remote network traffic over the VPN as opposed to through the internet.  In other words, what mechanism is put in place that recognizes whether or not the IP address that's trying to be located should be found on the remote vpn network and routed through the Astaro VPN LAN connection?

What I am trying to do is determine if I can a client up to use a specific set of DNS servers ONLY when the VPN is connected for authentication to active directory, and then use it's usual DNS servers when not connected. 

Hopefully this makes sense!

    The client only knows where to look because of routes that you either write explicity or that are created for you by the VPN or other service.  I think the answer to your question is "Yes" - but it's not clear to me exactly what you want to do.  Do you want to have a site-to-site VPN where the clients on one side use the DNS of the other side when the VPN is active?  Or, ???

    Ok, so when you go to the user portal and download the config files it has the routes built in.  

    I am trying to determine how we would make it possible for remote users (not remote offices) to authenticate to active directory. Here's the thing, on the LAN connection on the client we can set it to MANUALLY specify DNS servers and make sure that the primary DNS server for our AD domain is available to the client when the VPN is connected, that means we need to specify a secondary DNS server for the public internet.  I would like to figure out a way for this to work without having to specify DNS servers manually.  I was thinking if we specified dns servers ONLY on the Astaro Local Area Connection it could resolve internal domain dns names only when the VPN is connected.  I am not sure if that woudl work though because it always seems to use what is configured on the regular Local Area network connection in Windows.

    Sorry, I'm getting confused about what part is what you want to do and what part is your idea about how to achieve it.

    The Astaro SSL VPN allows backend groups.  The L2TP over IPsec VPN allows you to assign DNS.  I can't tell from your response the purpose of having remote users authenticate against AD, so it's hard to make a recommendation.

    Let me just say that we have remote users working from their home who connect to the network and authenticate to Active Directory via SSL client with no problems. In fact for laptop users, they can not tell the difference for when they are in the office or at home other than having to sign on to the VPN client. (Network bandwidth aside). 

    SSL client sets DNS as our internal DNS servers. Static routes on the Astaro allow the VPN pool to access what network resources they need and prohibit what they do not.

    Thanks for your increased participation here, mbrophy -  you write well and obviously have a strong background!

    One of the nifty things about the SSL VPN is that, like the Cisco and IPsec VPNs, it lets you precisely specify what is available to the remote users.  I suspect that this is what mbrophy meant:

    Select 'Automatic packet filter rules' and Astaro will build the routes and rules only for the hosts and networks listed in 'Local networks'.  If you put 'Any', then all of the VPN user's traffic will go through the tunnel.  If you put 'Internal (Network)' then the user will have a "split tunnel" - only traffic for 'Internal (Network)' will go through the tunnel.  If you just put the host definition for a single server, then that's all that will be available to the user.


    That said, our standard is L2TP over IPsec which is very secure and works flawlessly with the regular Windows VPN client.
