Any way to detect and disconnect an incative VPN session?

Greetings,
I have a client who is suffering from limited bandwidth.  They are getting another T-1 line installed, but until then they are trying to do what they can to make the most of what they got.

One of the ideas that came up was to close unnecessary connections.  This usually happens from users who connect from home, then leave their session open...forever.  Is there a way to detect an idle VPN session, and more importantly, disconnect after an idle period, say 30 minutes?

TIA for any ideas you have.

  • log on to the shell (root), and run iftop -i  ... see what's eating their bandwidth.

  • Thanks Bruce, that's a handy tool!
Well, we know what's taking up their bandwidth - they host a few FTP servers for their vendors to upload and download from.

Sorry if I led you down the wrong track, I'm mainly looking for a way to monitor and disconnect idle VPN sessions, if possible.
