Setup Astaro behind Load balancer PEPlink

According to the Peplink KnowledgeBase, their devices are delivered in "drop in" mode with all ports open.  If you're just now adding Astaro, then you probably have closed ports on the Peplink.  The Astaro can replace the Peplink, or you can just put the Peplink into "drop-in" mode.

Hi Bob, It's actually a new setup, we wanted to try  PEPlink and Astaro in replace of our existing router. One of the main reason is that currently some of our remote users are having difficulty logging in.  We wanted to try a new setup of LAN-->Astaro-->PEPLink.  Is there a way that PEPLink could transfer packets passing through Astaro or how I could configure Astaro to accept packets from PEPLink.  PEPLink would generally have a public ip while I use private ip for Astaro, eth0 192.168.0.1 (LAN) eth1 192.168.3.1 is connected to LAN port of PEPLink with ip 192.168.3.2

Because Uplink Balancing is free with the Astaro, the PEPlink brings nothing to the game, only complication.  This was not true prior to Astaro Version 7.400 which was released only two months ago.  Prior to V7.4, the only thing the PEPlink brought to the Astaro was the ability to load-balance two WAN links.  The PEPlink 200 is limited to two WAN links; the Astaro is limited only by the number of avalable Ethernet interfaces.

Having said that, if you have the PEPlink in "drop-in" mode, the approach you describe in your last sentence above should work.

Hi Bob, I'm using ASG120 with 7.104 firmware pattern version 6780, do you suggest I upgrade the firmware? It has 3 interfaces, will I use 1 for LAN and the other 2 should be set as DSL(PPPoE) for WAN links is that correct? or what can you suggest? by the way the public ips' one is static while the other is dynamic but the one with static ip will be the primary WAN if remote users would connect.

V7.402 seems very solid.  There have been some tremendous improvements in both the SMTP and HTTP proxies since 7.1.  It would be simpler and more reliable to do the load balancing in the Astaro, so, yes, I do think you should upgrade to V7.402.

If you have a newer version of the Astaro, you might want to take advantage of the upgrade to 1GB.  In the USA, it's only $100.

Do you have a Mail Security or Web Security subscription?

I finally got connected, I missed settings with PEPlink somehow it worked I was able to remote connect using SSL. [:D]

PePlink and complication? Are you sure that you have seen PePLink enough Bob at the latest versions? It is quite a good idea for the two systems to play together, and we have like more that 100 installations of PePLink + Astaro so what you say is not 100% true... Gerenally speaking, it is always better to have a separate router in front of the firewall anyways. If you have gigabit links (optical) that you have to balance, then balancing on a separate hardware is more than important...

Well, there's a difference between industrial-strength units and what is essentially a very-small-business unit.  Since they were just now setting this up, it seemed easier to limit learning to one new device.

If you have 100 such installations, then that architecture was certainly conceived before the Astaro had such a capability, just two months ago.  Given the expense of having an additional device, your organization might make a different decision today.  Or, it might do exactly the same thing.  In any case, if it's working for you, I would never suggest changing it!
