Can VPN from client be permanently Active?

Hi,

We set-up in the past VPNs for travellers..and they just had to dial the VPN connection and they were online.

My question is:

is possibile to set-up a client to establish a permanent VPN? I mean, if a local IP is requested, it will route it on the internal LAN, if a remote IP is requested the connection is routed thru the VPN?

We would like to give users local access to the internet and Exchange Server access on our internal network thru VPN.

Since those users are not always in the same place, we don't have a fix IP address and we cannot implement a Firewall to connect the two lans.

    It depends on the client. For example, if you are using Microsoft L2TP/IPSec client you can't do that.

    You could do a IPSEC tunnel from a windows client to the astaro gateway. The windows client would need to have a static public IP though.

    It's possible to do a permanent connection with the IPSec and for example the Astaro client.
    You can also configure a timout for max. connection time......
    If you don't do this, the client will only disconnect on reboot or manual disconnect....
    You can also configura a automatic dial if your client try to connect to the targed network.
    You don't need a static IP on the client side

    Microsoft's Outlook Mail client can be configured to autodial and use a VPN connection. This allows remote users to use the regular Outlook client.

    If your remote users use VPN connections all the time, then it is a good idea to masquerade the VPN address range used (in our case, we use PPTP connections, so that's the PPTP-Pool net) behind the WAN interface. That way they can browse the Internet as well when their VPN connection is active.
