What is faster: PPTP or L2TP ?

Hi,

We use PPTP to connect WinXP-Clients with VPN to our internal network. The ASL has an SDSL-connection with 1 MBit and the clients have ADSL with 1024/128 KBit. The connection works fine but is very slow: when i start the explorer and open e.g. a Word-document the transport is with about 8 KByte (i calculate it with a stop-watch).
My ASL Hardware is:
- ASL 5.212
- CPU: AMD Duron 1300
- RAM: 256 MB
- HDD: 20 GB IDE

Is my Hardware to small ? Is L2TP faster then PPTP ? Maybe you have a special tip for me...

    From the infield tests, L2TP is faster and more secure. 
    But get more ram, min 512MB and maybe a larger HD 40 GB should be enough. So you should be able to upgrade to Version 6 too.

    to complete this thread, i post here my experience:

    My new ASL Hardware is:
    - ASL 6.301
    - CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2200+
    - RAM: 1024 MB
    - HDD: 160 GB IDE

    The connection is now faster: when i start the explorer and open e.g. a Word-document the transport is with about 50-60 KByte (i calculate it with a stop-watch).

    If you are concerned about throughput speed, then you should be able to improve it significantly by installing additional RAM in the machine (256 MB just isn't enough!), and also upgrading from ASG ver 5 to ver 6. These changes will have far more impact on your firewall's performance than simply chosing between the PPTP and the IPsec flavors of VPN connections.
