Cannot Send Mail while connected to L2TP VPN

My Astaro box has 2 separate external IP's: x.x.x.132 is used for SMTP Auth Proxy and x.x.x.133 is used for VPN connections.  x.x.x.132 is externally resolvable using the name smtp.mydomain.com, using that for outgoing mail server works great!  However, once I connect to the vpn, I can no longer send mail.  It can still resolve smtp.mydomain.com but it eventually times out with the following error:

Sending Message Failed.
  
The message could not be sent because connecting to smtp.mydomain.com failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections.  Please verify that your SMPT server setting is correct and try again, or else contact your netwok administrator.

Obviously I could change my server settings and send mail from the internal side once connected, but I have a number of users that are on and off the vpn all day.  They do not want to have to change their server settings all the time.  I realize that once connected to the VPN on IP x.x.x.133 I could not use that IP for sending mail, so I figured a second external IP would fix that problem....I stand corrected!

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.  If you would like more config info just let me know and I will update this post ASAP.

    To follow up more on this issue.  I'd like to migrate this ASL into production but cannot until I solve the issue where email cannot be sent while connected to the VPN via L2TP.

    I did some more troubleshooting yesterday and found that while connected to the vpn I could not get to any of the network interfaces on my box...with any service.  netstat would show SYN_SENT and TIME_WAITs for my request but they never got to ASL.  Also, no packets were ever logged in the packet filter log while connected either.

    After a consiferable amount of time goofing around with this I determined that it must be a routing issue of some sort.  I mean these packets have to go somewhere right?   With that in mind I connected to my vpn, and manually added a route to smtp.mydomian.com via my Windows ppp IP aquired during my connection.....low and behold it worked!

    Does this indicate a problem with my VPN setup, SMTP setup or something else I am unaware of?

    Please advise.
