Problems establishing L2TP connection via 3G/UMTS

Hello everybody,

I'm trying to establish a VPN connection while on the road by means of a 3G/UMTS connection.

My notebook tells me it's trying to connect and after a while that the Astaro box (5.014) at home is not responding.

I have three different log files here and I do see the connection but I don't quite understand why it's not working.

Can anybody please shed some light on this?

In this example, the notebook is 10.129.8.234 while the Astaro box is 212.202.175.213. I don't know who / what 212.23.126.4 is...

    Folks-

    just wanted to let you know, the issues were solved. It was a problem with my UMTS network provider who mandates the use of a different access point to establish VPN connections. Once I switched from "internet.eplus.de" to "ipsec.eplus.de" everything worked like a charm.

    You did not mention what client you are using but my guess is Mac OS X 10.3. Is that correct? Are you using L2TP/IPsec or one of the GUI frontends for IPsec (IPsecuritas, VaporSec, VPN Tracker)? Or perhaps a manual configuration?

    I noticed from your logs that the client IP address appears to be 10.129.8.234. Does E-Plus use NAT on its UMTS connections? Does it work? I was under the impression that MacOS X does not support NAT-T?

    Hi,

    I experience the same problems with 3g/umts and l2tp connections (which work with lan and wlan wonderful).
    My provider is also eplus, but unfortunately I cant connect with the APN ipsec.eplus.de, internet.eplus.de works fine.

    Does ipsec.eplus.de still work with your setup?
    Which connection software do you use?

    I'm not sure if I understand the problem correctly but if one APN works fine, why do you want to get the other APN working?

    I don't see why UMTS would be anything different from other Internet access methods except for a few things:

    1. The provider might use NAT. In that case, make sure to get NAT-Traversal working correctly. If you use a Mac client for example (from his log I got the impression that Andreas was connecting with a Mac) you need at least Openswan 2.4.5.

    2. The provider might block certain VPN protocols and/or ports, for whatever reason (mostly greed, I guess). There is not much that can be done about this, except to try another APN (read: pay more for full Internet access) or to switch providers.

    3. There is more latency in mobile connections such as GPRS and UMTS. The VPN should still work, but who knows there is some finetuning needed due to timeouts etc.

    Because my whole L2TP setup is working fine and I just read the tipp in this thread which is also my cellphone provider here. And it reads fine when you read ipsec.eplus.de [;)]

    As I am using L2TP on windows and it works fine with NAT-T, I dont think thats just because an NAT-T issue.

    Thats more or less what I thought about and why I wanted to try out the APN ipsec.eplus.de. Wouldnt you, for me it sounds good for my problem.
