Can't make pptp work

Hi...

have you seen some interessting things in the log-files? How have you tried to start the PPTP-Daemon by hand? Can you give some examples off your network setup?

Hi - haven't seen ANYTHING in the pptp log files, except when I start the deamon by doing /sbin/init.d/pptpd start; then I see gthe daemon start messages.

For the network, I have eth0 as an internal network, eth1 is my DSL line, and eth2 is connected to a WAP.  eth0 is 192.168.1.0/24, eth2 is 192.168.2.0/24.  eth1 is an ISP assigned static IP.   

Based on the Windoze message (until I changed the pptp vpn, I was getting 'VPN not found' errors); I seem to be getting through to the firewall, but it's just not starting pptpd

hmmm, strange, "/sbin/init.d/pptpd start" works for you, but you can not see the pptpd process afterwards? Sounds like it is crashing... haven't seen something like this before... Are you sure with this?

Can you do the following commands after you started pptpd?

1. netstat -l | grep 1723

2. ps xa | grep pptpd

If you do not see the open port and the process, can you look if you
see the kernel modules for ppp being loaded?

3. lsmod | grep ppp

If you want to run pptpd in foreground, you can modify the pptpd startup file to do so. May be that helps you to see if pptpd is crashing or not.

The line starting pptpd within /sbin/rc.d/pptpd is:
   chroot $CR $PROG || ret_code=1
just change that line to:
   chroot $CR $PROG -f || ret_code=1

be carefull with that! You may not want to do it on a productive
machine!

OK - well, whatever I did earlier this eveing now seems to be at least partially working!  pptpd starts and stops like it's supposed to.  My network config looks like this:

eth0 - 192.168.1.250 - internal network
eth1 - xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx - Internet, my ISP, static IP
eth2 - 192.168.2.250 - connected to a WAP via a crossover cable.

So - I fire up my (wireless) laptop, and it's wireless interface connects and gets (from my DHCP) ip address 192.168.2.199.  Then I tell the laptop to connect to (via a pptp VPN) 192.168.2.250.  It connects, pptp runs, authenticates me, and gives me an address out of the pptp pool.   At that point, I can 'ping' (or ssh, or scp) anything on my INTERNAL network (192.168.1.0/24), but I can't do ANYTING to the Internet.

great! Well the next issue is more related to making good Packet Filter Rules or doing some kind of NAT/Masquerading. (https://community.sophos.com/products/unified-threat-management/astaroorg/f/52/t/27633)
may be is what you need.

When you try to ping some IP-numbers on the internet, do you see some entries (drop,reject) to your firewall logs? What is traceroute saying?

One hint for your setup, make sure that you actually use the VPN tunnel on the clientside! When you ping to your internal network, can you verify the way the packages are send to the internal netowrk? Do they really travel over the PPTP-tunnel? Or over the 192.68.2.0/24 network directly?
