PPTP does not work on my network

I have a Flowpoint 2200 Router, with NAT.  there is a private IP on the LAN port(172.16.0.1) and a public IP on the WAN side.
The ASL(3.212?) box has 172.16.0.2 on its WAN port and 10.0.0.1 on the LAN port, and routes between the router and my LAN.  The Flowpoint Router has static mappings passing traffic to ports 110,25,21,1723,47 to 172.16.0.2(ASL).  Everything works perfectly EXCEPT for PPTP.  I've been seeing reports stating that PPTP will NOT work across NAT.  I'm assuming this means when the ASL is NAT but maybe I'm wrong.  Is this true or does this have to do with the fact that I'm connected to a NAT'ed router, even though there are static port mappings...
Does ASL require public IP's on either WAN or both WAN and LAN for PPTP to function?
I've been getting the 619 error. Portscans show that 1723 is alive.  I can telnet to the port and am not refused (does this mean anything?)
Am I just out of luck here or can this scenario be made to work?

    Try the new beta Astaro version, it supports PPTP over NAT.
    (Look in the ASL Hackers/Beta forum).

    Like, could my router be the problem?  Do I NEED to provide the astaro with a REAL IP in the WAN port, or does this not matter.  I am getting conflicting reports about which aspect of NAT is my problem, the router's NAT or the astaro's NAT. I don't want to radically alter my router's configuration to provide a REAL IP to the Astaro and then find out it STILL won't work.  I need to make serious decisions, otherwise I'm going to pull the box out.
    So please, if you could illuminate things a bit more I'd really appreciate it.
