PPTP connection timeout values?

My PPTP connection from home (cable modem) to our office (managed business ADSL) seems to be timing out sometimes, but only if I am not actively using it obviously. Is this the way it is supposed to be? If yes, is there a way to stop it from doing this? We'd like to keep some connections up permanently if possible.
