VPN and Computer Names

This may be posted somewhere but I did not find it.
I can connect through VPN and I can get internet and I can ping my internal network using IP addresses. But when I try to ping names it doesn't work. Such as ping mycomputer. I am suspecting its something with netbios but I can't figure it out. If I do a "ping -a 192.168.1.1" I can get the computer name I can THEN run a "\computername" and connect to it, but not before I run that name lookup. How can I fix this?

    you need to setup a WINS server or you would have
    to maintain a local lmhost file.

    I have setup a WINS server but am still unable to browse computers or get computer names before I ping them,

    I am pretty sure no matter what you do, you will not be able to Browse....even if you have a wins server...because browsing is just another word for broadcasting and and the firewall does not foreward broadcasts

    the only other advise I can give is that when you go into properties of the VPN connection and go to networking/advanced....add the Wins server there...maybe you did that but it is not clear....

    one thing is clear is that you are able to resolve the computer name once you haved pinged the IP address.....this is telling me that once you ping the IP address the Net Bios name of the computer is put into the cache....to eleviate this problem you can add that machine with the #pre to the LMhosts file....this may be a good place to put the entry of the wins server as well...
