MS Exchange through PPTP VPN

Exchange 5.5 and 2000 both have OWA you should use that.   OWA = Outlook Web Access

Just ensure you have IIS WWW enabled and type in this

http://X.X.X.X/exchange    enter your user and pass.   This works as long as your PROFILE exist on the server.   I also recommend using POPBEAMER or POPCON to pop your email for you while your on the road.  

Running your profile through VPN is a very bandwidth intensive thing and thats kinda why OWA was started.  If you have a set IP on this exchange server then just use that and dont bother using the VPN

Can you ping the IP of the Exchange server?
Try creating a hosts file with the netbios name of the exchange server.

If you resolve in using OWA, I will advice you use it SSL for security reason.

Yes, Exchange over VPN is bandwidth intensive since your email client will initiate synchronization of all mails on your Exchange Server.  I do not think that there is a possiblity to tell the system to synchronize only new mails.

I am not sure how VPN policy is in astaro, but you should also check if the Exchange Server box is included in Servers accessible through the VPN Policy.
