Overview of ASL to ASL link

If anyone who has an ASL to ASL connection working well can you spend a second to write an overview of how?

I assume that you want to link an ASL to ASL box to bridge networks together.  That way you could trust domains behind it?  I assume that is one way of doing it.  If not let me know that is my goal.
