PPTP Routing Changes

When I establish a PPTP from a VPN class C to a VPN Class A, I lose my routing through my LAN connection.

LAN Connection 192.168.1.2
Gateway 192.168.1.1

PPTP Connection 10.121.61.2
Gateway 10.121.61.2

tracert 192.168.1.1

tracing      10.121.61.2

Why does it try to go through my PPTP to route, if my LAN connection already has a default gateway defined. Win2K Professional installed. I think it is something that Windows is doing. I will look at MSs knowledgebase. If someone has seen this, please post. A lot of people are saying that PPTP is not working. This will cause it to stop working if you lose your default gateway through your LAN connection. Can't do PPTP if you lose the default gateway when connecting. 

Also, PPTP works, but only after you install the High Encryption pack and are using a registered public network address for your LAN connection.

    Hey all, 

    Update on this issue. Disable use Default Gateway in PPTP properties. This resolves the issue of loosing your default LAN gateway on the adapter. By default your LAN adapter has a metric of 1 on the default gateway. When you connect with PPTP, a new default Gateway is added with a metric of 2 and tries to route all of your traffic. This will hose your machine's ability to route if you are using a VPN. It tries to route all traffic through PPTP. Disable PPTPs default gateway and it works like a charm for the VPNs.

    the issue U are having is related to Windows tendency of assigning the last successfull TCP/IP connection (in your case your VPN connection) as your "new defaulf gateway" by demoting your original dafault gateway to a lower metric(2 instead of 1) and giving your VPN connection a metric of 1.
                I find this to be a big plus for me since  all I have to do to make things work fine is  to make my home VPN connection a totally different IP range from my work IP range and then I manually enter a "Persistent route" for my work IP networks, then when I connect to my home network via ASL I get the default gateway (which is exactly what I want ,since I want to bypass the firewall). 
       To make a persistent route in windows do the following: "route -P ADD  MASK   METRIC 1 "  
    ....For example at work all my internal networks are in the "192.168.x.x " range and I have a default gateway (DGW) of "192.168.3.254" so I add a persistent route like so:
      "route -P ADD 192.168.0.0 MASK 255.255.0.0 192.168.3.254 METRIC 1 " this will encompass all the various networks , so that all packets destined for the 192.168.x.x network will use  192.168.3.254 instead of the new DGW that now exist as a result of connecting to ASL; but all my web and home traffic will automatically use the VPN tunnel, thereby avoiding the firewall rules :-)
