Buggy VPN or PPOE 2.0

Every time I enable PPOE I lose ssh and all access to the Astaro Box.
I also had this happen on 1.x series and gave up. 
It can't really be this hard to setup a VPN but something is really screwed. The How-TO is not working for ssh sentinel.
Has anyone gotten sentinel to work?
