Switched to a New ISP

We recently switched to a New ISP.

We had to provide our own Edge Router and our ISP gave us a transit /30 address.

We were also assigned Public IP addresses /29. total of 5 usable IP addresses.

I finally got the hardware configured a Ubiquity EdgeRouter PRO. the /30 address on eth0 and the /29 address on Eth1 which is connected to Eth1 on the Sophos UTM.

We have 3 private networks configured in our Sophos UTM. Firmware Version 9.506.

network 1 = office Network

network 2 = production network

network 3 = wifi network

Here is my issue.

If I run an internet speed test from my office network or the production network I get Download Speed of 47 Mbs, Upload Speed of 5 Mbs.

If I run an internet speed test from within the edge router bypassing the Sophos UTM I get Download Speed of 47 Mbs, Uplad Speed of 47 Mbs.

We should have a 50 x 50 Internet connection from our ISP.

I don't know if the SOPHOS is limiting the Upload Traffic?

  • What do you get from the following?  Copy and paste the block to the command line:

    cd /home
    wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sivel/speedtest-cli/master/speedtest.py --no-check-certificate
    cc set ips status 0
    sleep 15s
    python speedtest.py
    cc set ips status 1
    sleep 30s
    python speedtest.py

  • I ran the speed test from the command line for the SG-125 Here are my results

we are suppose to have 50 up and 50 down.

  • In that case, I agree with Louis.  Try #7.7 in Rulz.

  • In the instance I was referring to, it was a managed Cisco router to which we had no access. We had to contact the ISP to get them to change the speed/duplex at their end.

    The UTM then played ball.

  • Wow that speedtest for the shell is very nice, thanks!

Apart from that: UPLOAD should never be affected by IPS, unless totally misconfigured. And as every speedtest: it can only give a direction and middle throughput should be measured after 10 tests or so.

Ontopic: any throttling, QoS or bandwith pools active? (maybe cause it made sense on the old ISP's line?)

  • the UTM QOS is enabled for only the WAN. the Bandwidth setting is set at maximum 1024.

We use to have an AT&T Router of which we had no access.  since we switched to a New ISP, we were responsible for installing our own Router.

I purchased a Ubiquity EdgeMax Pro.

On the Router I set eth0 to the WAN /30 address.

On the Router I set eth1 to the LAN Gateway Address 121/29

on the UTM eth1 is set to the WAN Address 122/29 with gateway 121/29.

Internal LANS on the UTM on eth0, eth2, and eth3. with .123/29, 124/29, and 125/29 respectively.

Download speed seems fine, but having issues with upload speed. I have tried changing the QOS on the Router, and in the UTM.

I don't know what else I can do. at this point is it the ISP, EdgeMax or the UTM.  if I do a speed test from within the Edgemax, the upload speed varies, any where from 6 Mbits/s to 45 Mbits/s. it uses the same shell commands as the UTM. the Upload speed tests from the UTM varies from 3 Mbits/s to 10 Mbits/s.

We are suppose to have 50Mbits/s Download and 50 Mbits/s Upload. Not getting that.

  • Just gone back over this and in you first post:

if I do a speed test from within the Edgemax, the upload speed varies, any where from 6 Mbits/s to 45 Mbits/s. it uses the same shell commands as the UTM. the Upload speed tests from the UTM varies from 3 Mbits/s to 10 Mbits/s.

As the UTM is behind the edgemax, there is no point in even going there at the moment.

You need to concentrate on the edgemax and ISP to get a consistent 50/50mb. As previously mentioned, first thing to check is:

    1. your speed and duplex settings on the edgemax eg 100mb full duplex.
    2. Any QoS/throttling on the edgemax
    3. Then contact ISP to see if they have anything going on eg throttling/QoS etc

Once that is done and you are getting a 50/50mb, you can then look at the UTM if required.

  • My notes say I got that here from WayneBoyles in Feb 2016, Kevin.
