QoS Internal Interface throttling Wan bandwidth

 UTM  ver 9.414-2   ASG220

Greetings,

We are attempting to utilize QoS on our network and seem to have some wires crossed. We receive 100Mbs service from our ISP but when we engage the internal interface under         QoS->status   the wan test shows the bw is scaled down to 10Mbs . I can't determine what setting is controlling this. I know this is a step towards what QoS is suppose to. I'm trying to understand the controls so we can use QoS  effectively.

Any guidance will be appreciated.

thank you,

  • You're only showing part of the story there. With interfaces, the first thing is to make sure you tell the UTM what bandwidth they do have (as above)

You need to go through the tabs on QoS eg Traffic selectors, bandwidth pools etc to see exactly what is there.

It's very easy in the UTM via other tabs/menus to set QoS going unintentionally which comes back and bites you later on eg from dashboard, you can click on the traffic graph which pops up another window in which you can throttle, shape what traffic is going through the UTM. You then forget about this only to find it's lurking in the background at some later stage.

  • Thank you Louis-M for your excellent guidance!

As you suggested, I went through every one of the QoS Tabs:Traffic Selector, Bandwidth Pools etc. and deactivated then checked the bw. None of which affected anything until I came to Internal(up) under Bandwidth Pools which gave me full download bw  then the one under "Download Load Throttle" called  Internal(up) which gave me full upload bw.  I guess it should be a surprise that when theses were turned off . . . vuella!  A bit confusing the (up) label for both.

Now I that have full throttle control again how would I go about creating the desired results across the campus of two separate buildings having a total 100Mbs from our ISP where:

Wifi users (vlan60 & vlan70)  can only gobble up 25Mbs

    Wired users (Vlan61 & vlan71)  are allowed 50Mbs

    Administration vlan1 has  25Mbs

I noticed that when I edit the Internal interface (under QoS Status) it does not matter what I enter into the DownLink/Uplink boxes is pulls the full available bw.

Checking the Limit uplink throttles my download only and checking Limit Uplink throttles my uplink. (?)

Thanks again for help me through this maze.

  • That should say:

Checking the Limit uplink throttles my downloads from the net only and checking Limit Downlink throttles my upload to the net  (?)

  • Frank, I'm confused about why you would limit downloads to the Internal interface.  The effect of the 'Limit Downlink' setting in your last picture is to restrict traffic from the devices in "Internal (Network)" to a combined upload speed of 50 Mbps.  If you're trying to allow certain bandwidth to different LANs and VLANs, you probably want Bandwidth Pools and Download Throttling rules on the External interface instead.

    Cheers - Bob
