Do Bandwidth Pools Reduce Other Traffic When not Being Used?

Hi,

I set up QoS on my SG230 and so far, so good ... I think. But something just occurred to me:

As an example: If I set up a bandwidth pool for, say, VPN Traffic and guarantee 15Mbs of my total 50Mbs bandwidth. If no one is using the VPN, is other traffic still limited to 35Mbs or does it just prioritize the traffic when needed and allow other services to use the bandwidth when not?

Thanks,

Jeff

ps - I tried to run speed tests to figure it out but it's difficult finding a time when no one is using one of the pools.

  • I would imagine that it will work like the firewall rules. The first one that matches will get the bandwidth working from top to bottom.

So, if the traffic doesn't match your rule, nothing will be applied and everything will drop to the default rule of best effort.....
