Allocate bandwidth to a specific device - or prioritize bandwidth to that device over all others in my SG125 UTM9.

I want to allocate bandwidth to a specific device - or else prioritize bandwidth to that device over all others in my SG125 UTM9.  I was pointed to the article on setting up traffic selectors and throttling bandwidth but I couldn't understand how to do exactly this. It seemed easier to LIMIT bandwidth for certain apps.  But I just want a specific device to have priority over all other devices or perhaps even to allocate a certain amount or percentage of bandwidth to that device whether it is on the LAN or WLAN.

I am new to Sophos so please don't assume too much knowledge of how to do things!  Thanks in advance!

    Hi,

    First you should know that you can only priorize outgoing traffic.

     

    1. Edit and enable the interface for outgoing traffic. Fill in the correct badwith!

    2. Define a traffic selector like this: source (your device) - service (any) - destination (any etc.)

    3. Goto Tab "Bandwith Pools" and select the correct interface at "Bound to interface"

    4. Create a bandwith pool, specify the reserved bandwith and select the created traffic selector.

    The advantage of Christian's approach is that the only limit on the other traffic is the guarantee of bandwidth to the preferred traffic - if there's no preferred traffic, 100% of the bandwidth can be used by the other traffic.

    Reserving bandwidth for inbound traffic is messier and can only be accomplished by limiting traffic with Download Throttling rules.  Sometimes conditions will be such that there's not much to be done.  In general, use an "exception" rule first for the preferred traffic, e.g., with a 95Mbps-guaranteed-minimum line where you want to reserve 10Mbps for your preferred traffic:

    Limit preferred traffic to 1000Mbps
    Limit other traffic to 85Mbps
