Optional Web Filtering Login on SG230?

Hi All,

We're on a SG230, running 9.311-3.

We run our web filter in Transparent Mode. I block all potentially harmful extensions from download (exe, vbs, etc), but sometimes i need to download one of those myself. Usually I have my IP address as an exception but if I'm at a user's machine, it would be great to not have to go back to my desk to do the download, or have to enter the user's IP as an exception then take it off again.

I see Transparent Mode still has authentication options. Does this mean authentication is not required, and it will use the Default Content filter, unless I specifically log in (I assume if I user Browser then I just go my my gateway's LAN address to so this)?

What I want is for no one to have to log in to get web access, but for me to have the option to log in to override whatever I need to. Is that possible?

I am listed in there, but the only way I see to tell the gateway "it's me" is by my LAN IP address. Is there a way to have it prompt for a login whenever the filter blocks something? I can enter credentials to override the filter when it blocks a page by content, but not when it blocks extensions.

Jeff, when you get the block message, there's a button at bottom-right to let you override the block.

Web protection -> Filtering Options -> Bypass users

You can there select users that should be able to override the filtering.

I am listed in the bypass users screen. I can download to my own workstation because I have a static IP so it knows it's me. The problem is when I download directly from another (which I need to do occasionally).

BTW, thank you for your help & patience with this!! If i start seeming too annoyingly obtuse I'll dig around elsewhere. :)

Jeff, I think it's time to get Sophos Support involved. This should work as you have it configured.
